BATS (1999) 5.5 OUT OF 10
Lou Diamond Philips lead a cast of character actors through a high-budget, low art tribute to Alfred Hitchcocks' The Birds.
Dr. Sheila Casper, played by Dina Meyer, is called upon by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) to go to Texas to investigate an animal murder, i.e. a murder by an animal. She is a bat expert, so obviously its bats that did the kiling. The problem is bats don't kill people. Genetically mutated bats hybridized from Flying Fox bats from Southeast Asia have been trained to be "the perfect killing machines." Dr. Alexander McCabe, played by Bob Gunton, is the psychopath who created them.
The rest of the plot is predictable, but well executed.
The acting is good, if not great. Each of the actors is experienced and well-respected. The script is mediocre. Some of the plot twists are silly on the verge of humourous.
The best bad part of the movie is the bats themselves. Omnivourous and vicious killers, these bats chase peple down looking for ways to kill them. There are lots of close-ups of the faces of these beasts. There are actually funny to watch, especially the parts where they express emotion with the squeeks they emit. It's kind of like watching Gremlins.
Sorry, guys, this movie is not free or public domain, but if you like B horror one of the fine examples of a tradition that is alive and well.
More soon, have a great movie day.
