Beverly Hills Cop.....again
May 30th 2008 01:34
After the success of Indy 4, Rambo 4 and the like, it seems someone decided that reviving Beverly Hills Cop is a good idea.
It isn't.
Indy 4 was quality. Heaps of fun, over the top action, crazy sci-fi / quasi religious themes. Exactly what I wanted from an Indiana Jones film. But continually bringing back old franchises is bollocks. I'm all for remembering kick arse films, even the occasional remake is bareable (see: Ocean's 11) but surely Hollywood execs have people smart enough to think up their own ideas instead of poaching old blockbusters.
Another thing, Indy 4 has meant to be in development pretty much since The Last Crusade. So it's slightly less annoying than Stalone's recent filmography.
I'm all for Beverly Hills Cop, in fact in January I was in LA, and visited Beverly Hills, instead of caring about fancy celebrities houses and such, I was just humming the theme song, and was exceedingly happy about seeing that hotel. They kicked arse, and they remind me about how rediculously funny Eddie Murphy's old stuff was. But just bringing back old films 20 years after they've been finished, is a rubbish plan.
It's a cop out, there are people out there with quality ideas for movies (see: Iron Sky) that get ignored by Hollywood, instead they fall back on a 20 year old franchise.

Who the hell can out-play Eddie Murphy? Who can replace greatness?
Now . . . if Eddie returns, I'm there. But he needs writing credit. If his sense of humor--adult humor--is not tapped, then it might as well be AVP: a flop of flops.
I loved Rambo with the geriatric superstar Stallone. In fact, I adored it! Accurate, current, brooding, and ultra-bloody. Oh . . . yeah.
