Not every movie should be watched. I watch the ones that most people avoid. I'll tell you what's good, what's great, what's horrible.

Books to Film

June 4th 2008 06:38
Some of the greatest film's of all time have been adapted from classic books. Gone With the Wind, Jurassic Park, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, I Am Legend/The Omega Man/The Last Man on Earth (all based on the book 'I Am Legend'), The Godfather, James Bond all based on books.

I Am Legend

I've been reading the 'Temeraire' series and the fact that Peter Jackson has bought the rights to film it, is pretty exciting. It's the story of the Napoleonic Wars....with dragons. Sounds kinda lame, I know, but it works. The idea of seeing epic Napoleonic battles, with dragons flying overhead scrapping with each other could be amazing.

His Majesty's Dragon aka Temeraire

So my question is simple, what book, or other form of story I guess, would you like to see turned into a film?

The list would be longer than my arm, and some that I'd like to see are coming down the pipeline (Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road', Dennis Lehane's 'Shutter Island'). But I really want to see Jeff Smith's 'Bone' comics turned into the greatest series of Disney films ever made.

"Emerald and the Magic of Raynon" series by Orble's own Manda Spring would be my choice, Geoff. Great kids stories that adults enjoy, too. Sort of like a female Harry Potter... in a way.

Second on "The Road"... hopefully, it's brought to light with the right crew. I'd say Coen bros, but that won't happen.

Also, I Am Legend is an all-time-classic. The Will Smith movie was a heap of fetid trash. Are the other versions any good?

I've never seen them to tell the truth Cibb. I've heard they are good. I didn't mind the Will Smith version, but only because it showed him living by himself for 90% of the movie. It had sweet FA to do with the book, which is stupid because it's such a filmable story.

I'm quite partial to The Omega Man, but that's more because it's part of Charlton Heston's cheesy sci-fi phase than because it's a good flick.

The Road is being directed by John Hillcoat, who did the excellent film The Proposition, so I have much faith in its quality.
