A blog about films. Not celebrities. Not (necessarily) reviews. More likely just assorted news, and my deranged ranting.....

Curchill had nothing on Optimus Prime

March 28th 2008 06:07
Well that took longer than expected. During my extended Easter break though I managed to watch a couple of movies, namely The History Boys and The Rock. The History Boys is the standard story about an inspirational teacher educating his kids on more than just his curricula. With strange, homosexual tendencies. Think Dead Poet’s Society with weird themes of student-teacher love. It got me thinking, how many movies that aren’t meant to inspire anything have these crazy moments where that just make you stand and scream with excitement?

The Rock gave me a moment like that. In the middle of the movie Michael Beihn (yeah I can harp on about him for ages) is trapped, Ed Harris has him outmanned and outmanoeuvred. But instead of giving in Beihn fights a heroic yet tragic battle for what it right…..

Two more movies immediately come to mind

In Terminator 2 Arnie has about 70,000 quotable lines. But one of my favourites is always going to be ‘Come with me if you want to live’. I’m not even sure I need to comment much more on this. In a movie otherwise full of nothing but explosions and other excellence, this one line stands out. A (female) friend of mine was not a fan of Terminator or Arnie, yet she saw that one bit and was captivated. All of a sudden the whole experience was amazing. Admittedly she got bored and left about 15 minutes later but let’s ignore that.

Terminator 2

Finally Transformers: The Movie the original 80s classic for those that remember it has possibly the single most inspirational moment of all movie history. In the first twenty minutes the Decipticons attack the Autobot’s Earth Base, killing scores of defenders. Trapped inside with the mighty Devastator bearing down on them the Autobot’s call out for help from Optimus Prime; who is positioned far away on the Autobot’s moon base near Cybertron. Just when all looks lost Optimus arrives, sets the Dinobots onto Devastator before declaring ‘Megatron must be stopped. No matter the cost’. Cue Stan Bush The Touch. Finally after a long struggle (and trust me I could quote most lines in that movie) Megatron stands over Prime pistol in hand, both of their metallic hides crackes and battered from the epic battle, and states ‘I’ve waited an eternity for this; it’s over Prime’. Damaged and ultimately defeated Prime glares up at Megatron and screams and almighty ‘NEVER!’ before belting Megatron over a ledge with a double handed uppercut.

Man this was hard to find

Man I may just go and watch that again. And If anyone was expecting some great intellectual piece after a week of nothing sorry to disappoint, but I would take any of these over Dead Poet's Society or Finding Forester any day of the week.

PS. A youtube of ‘The Touch’ for everyone to remember better times…..

I get a kick out of some of the old movies, too. What always gets me is after watching a really old one, then you see the actors in something else and wonder how they got so old! lol

Good post, Geoff!
