'Pub?'; or: a New Pegg, Wright Film!
April 4th 2008 02:56
Variety and The Guardian are reporting that Edgar Wright will be co-writing a third and possibly final film with Simon Pegg titled The World’s End. This, according to Wikipedia (one of the most trustworthy websites ever), will be a parody of both Science Fiction and Doomsday genres. It will be the final film in the ‘Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy’ (or ‘The Cornetto Trilogy’, but that probably has copyright issues or something rubbish).
All I can say is: shit yes!
Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were awesome films, by far two of the funniest movies of the past decade. And the TV show Spaced which the two of them also collaborated on was again hilariously funny. I seriously advise anyone who hasn’t seen them and likes Sean or Fuzz to track it down. I really should include Nick Frost as a major part of all of this as well; he’s started alongside Pegg in all of these, and played excellent characters every time. I still haven’t seen Run, Fatboy, Run but I don’t hold high hopes for it, despite having Pegg and Dylan Moran (possibly the best British comedian since Billy Connelly, and I saw that in all seriousness) starring. So having Wright and Frost back with Pegg is some of the best news I’ve heard.
Unlike say the SNL crew (of Will Ferrell etc) these guys are far more consistent. Anchorman, Zoolander and Dodgeball were awesome, but Kicking and Screaming and Blades of Glory were decidedly average. But so far all three of the pieces I’ve seen these British guys work together on have been fantastic.
These are parody films that are actually clever and admiring of the genres they are lampooning. Unlike say the Scary Movie style that are just plain shite. They are just like listening to those ‘String Tribute to Radiohead/Tool/Metallica’ etc. Vaguely interesting but mainly makes you just want to go and listen to the original. Whenever Epic Movie rears its ugly head I find myself reaching for Indiana Jones or Star Wars, for Scary Movie the Exorcist or Alien, actual good movies in the genre.
If you want to know how to make a spoof movie, just go and watch Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz: hilarious movies that really well take on the task of making fun of zombie and action movies respectively. They reference other movies in a more direct loving way then just throwing it out in the cheesy manner that these other ones do (is there a name of this series of abominations? No? I’m going to call them the Shit Movies then). In Hot Fuzz, most of the conversations for a good 5 minutes of the film are about ‘leaping through the air firing two guns’ or ‘unloading a clip into the air after realising that you can’t shoot your best mate’. Both quality moments from quality actions films (John Woo stuff and Point Break), before performing the exact same actions later in the movie. Essentially the difference I think I’m trying to make is that the Scary Movie school appear to have zero respect for the work they are spoofing, whereas good parodies have nothing but respect for them.
After that tangent I’ll go back to my original point. Pegg and Wright are a great duo, and I hope that this new one won’t be the last piece they do together. But I look forward to it a great deal. This is definitely some of the best movie news I’ve heard in a while!
