Recycle (2006) 8.5 out of 10
Dir: The Pang Brothers
Okay, so I found this movie stuck in my local Redbox. The blurb that they have does not do it justice.
This is another great film by the Pang Brothers, who are fast becoming the Wes Craven's of the Hong Kong horror set.
In this movie, a beautiful young writer is struggling to write her second book, Recycle, which is about spirits.
Her writings bring spritis to life and into her world. She begins to experience terror inside her own home. Then, she finds herself pulled into the world of the spirits that she created.
The visuals in this movie are scary enough for any horror fan, but also rival the vastness and complexity of PAN'S LABYRINTH (Warning: They are a lot darker and more disturbed). The lead is played by Angelica Lee and a gifted performance is given by the very young Yaqi Zeng.
This is a story of possiblities and losses; it is about pain and death; it is about life and suffering. It has a clear moral ending without being too obnoxious.
The moral at the end will make most people uncomfortable, but taken in the context of Communist China, it becomes a social commentary.
This film is great for the horror buff who wants a bit more than slashers, breasts and bad acting.
Check this film out!!!!
