The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) 8.5/10
This is a must see movie! It's free and on moviesfoundonline.com.
The racial stereotypes might seem painful now, but at the time, this was considered factual enough to cause a controversy.
The movie is about Dan Freeman, played by Lawrence Cook, who becomes the first black CIA agent. He is exemplary, a great athlete and academically excellent. The CIA does everything they can to keep "those people" out of the ranks of its agents, including grading on a curve and digging deep. They look for Freeman to be a radical, a pinko or a homosexual. He's none of these things.
There are painful conversations where his white superiors. In his last talk with his boss, a black man is serving coffee, while the white guy is saying, "You are a credit to your race." and "Your people need to serve their country." Here's one black man serving, while another is a CIA agent and all the white man can see is negros.
Then Freeman returns to his native Chicago and starts working with a subversive, revolutionary organization.
See the movie to know the rest. It's worth it.
Apparently, United Artists pulled this movie from distribution because of how controversial it is. Even now with an African-American President, this movie is look back not so far (I was a kid when this movie was released).
This is a great movie about the turbulent seventies. This is not Saturday Night Fever!
And oh yeah! It's great action movie too.
You have got to see this movie.
