Warning From Space (1956) 5.5/10
Dir: Koji Shima
This story starts out with giant star-fish people gathered around a couple of swirling circles. They announce that "The Earthlings must be stopped."
Okay, here is where the movie goes from maybe interesting to funny. You can tell that these are people in five-pointed suits with sticks in their hands and pointy hats on. They have a giant flashing eye in the middle of their stomachs. The English dubbing isn't terrible, but the plot is pretty transparent.
The first scene with Dr. Komura shows us the pouring rain, which suddenly disappears in the next scene.
Alright, well, let's talk about the redeeming virtues of this movie.
Firstly, it's in color. The color isn't great, but for people who hate black and white, it's not bad.
Secondly, the acting appears to be sincere. Sometimes, some of these movies appear to be comedies, but here the physical acting is not terrible.
I won't give away the whole plot, but the Pyrans (the star-fish people) came to warn us about an imminent collision with a space rock. The scientists then get together to convince the world's governments to use nuclear weapons to blow it out of the sky. They are apparently from a planet in oppositional orbit around the Sun, directly across from the Earth.
I like this movie. It's predictable and silly, but not bad entertainment for $0.25. This came on a dollar disc from Digiview Entertainment with 3 other movies. I don't recall exactly where I got it, but I believe it was from Walmart.
I'm giving this a 5.5 out of 10 because I think that the acting and directing are sincere, even if the plot is a bit threadbare. Also the transformation scene with #1 is cool for a 50's movie.
